Yorkshire's first single malt from Spirit of Yorkshire

Home to Yorkshire’s first single malt whisky, Spirit of Yorkshire was launched in 2016 and is a collaboration between farmer and brewer, David Thompson and Tom Mellor. Friends for decades, the pair shared a dream of creating a Yorkshire whisky that doesn’t simply replicate Scotch. After many conversations, the pair joined forces to launch their very own distillery in the rural village of Hunmanby.

Aged in bourbon and sherry barrels, and with the help of renowned whisky expert Dr Jim Swan, David and Tom were proud to debut the county’s first ever single malt whisky named Filey Bay. Inspired by the bay that is in sight of the distillery, Filey Bay Single Malt Whisky has since been hailed an exciting addition to both the English and world whisky categories. And there’s plenty more that sets Spirit of Yorkshire apart from other distilleries. A true field to glass distillery where quality underpins every aspect of production, David said “We’re in control of every stage of the growing and distilling process, from choosing the variety of barley and how it is grown, right through to bottling ourselves at the distillery.”
